The Greek epic poems that shaped Western literature were composed around the same time the Hebrew prophets were writing.
While Amos, Hosea, and Isaiah were delivering God's messages to Israel and Judah, a Greek poet (or poets) known as Homer was composing the Iliad and the Odyssey. These foundational works of Western literature drew on centuries of oral tradition about the Trojan War. The parallel timing reminds us that the biblical prophets were part of a broader ancient world buzzing with literary creativity.
