The city of Ur experienced its golden age, becoming the capital of a powerful Sumerian renaissance.
From roughly 2112 to 2004 BCE, Ur's Third Dynasty controlled most of Mesopotamia and presided over a cultural revival. King Ur-Nammu built the magnificent Great Ziggurat of Ur, a massive stepped temple that still partially stands today in southern Iraq. This is the same Ur that the Bible identifies as Abraham's homeland — the prosperous, cosmopolitan city he left behind when called by God.
