Tiglath-Pileser III seizes the Assyrian throne and builds the most efficient military machine the ancient world has ever seen.
Starting around 745 BCE, Tiglath-Pileser III revolutionized the Assyrian Empire with a professional standing army, a provincial system replacing vassal kings, and mass deportation of conquered peoples. His annals record campaigns against Damascus and Israel, and he forced tribute from King Menahem of Israel and later annexed much of the northern kingdom. He's called 'Pul' in some biblical texts.
