When Israel divided the forty-eight Levitical cities the Gershonite line received two cities in the half-tribe of Manasseh — Golan in Bashan and Beeshterah — plus additional Gershonite holdings in Issachar Asher Naphtali and Zebulun.
Joshua 21:27-33 records the Levitical-city allotment for the Gershonite line of Levi: "Unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beeshterah with her suburbs; two cities." The Gershonites received thirteen cities total, scattered through the trans-Jordan tribes (Manasseh-east) and across the northern tribes (Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, Zebulun) — ensuring priestly presence in the most distant Israelite territories.
