When poisonous snakes overrun the Israelite camp as judgment for their complaining, God tells Moses to make a bronze snake — and anyone who looks at it lives.
The people are complaining again — about the food, the water, the whole journey. God sends venomous snakes into the camp and many people die. When the people repent, God doesn't remove the snakes. Instead, He tells Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten who looks at it will survive. Jesus later points to this moment as a picture of His own crucifixion.
