Joshuas catalog of Judahs sixth hill country district names six cities — Maarath Beth-anoth and Eltekon among them — that filled the rugged inner highlands south of Bethlehem and east of Hebron.
Joshua 15:59 catalogs the sixth district of Judah's hill country inheritance: "Maarath, and Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages." (The Septuagint preserves a longer reading naming eleven cities including Tekoa, Ephrathah, Bethlehem, Peor, Etam, and Kulom — possibly preserving original text that fell out of the Masoretic tradition.) The towns lay in the rugged interior highlands south of Bethlehem and east of Hebron, in the cluster of small farming settlements that filled the central Judean spine.
