What Happened

King Ahaz is terrified by an alliance of enemy nations threatening Judah. Isaiah tells him to ask God for a sign, but Ahaz refuses. Isaiah gives one anyway: a virgin will bear a son named Immanuel, meaning 'God with us.' The prophecy becomes one of the most famous messianic passages in the Bible.

Two enemy armies are closing in on Jerusalem, and King Ahaz is shaking. God offers him any sign he wants — sky-high or grave-deep — and Ahaz says no. So God gives him one anyway: a child named Immanuel.
