When Joshua grew old the Lord named the territories still unconquered — the Philistine coast all Geshuri the Sidonian hill country Mearah and the Phoenician interior — and commanded that the land be divided by lot among the tribes regardless to inherit by faith what their swords had not yet taken.
Joshua 13:1-7 records the Lord's farewell charge to the aged Joshua naming the territories that still remained to be possessed: "Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed. This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri... And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon... All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim, and all the Sidonians... and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek." The unconquered Phoenician hinterland would never come fully under Israelite control.
