Joshuas catalog of Ashers tribal allotment names the Mediterranean coastal cluster — Achzib Ummah Aphek and Rehob — among the twenty-two cities of the inheritance that ran from Mount Carmel north to the Phoenician city-states of Tyre and Sidon.
Joshua 19:29-31 closes the catalog of Asher's tribal coastal inheritance: "And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib, Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages." The allotment ran from Mount Carmel north along the Mediterranean coast to the Phoenician city-states of Tyre and Sidon — strategic terrain Asher could never fully wrest from the entrenched Phoenician cities. Most of Asher's history remained one of partial inheritance shared with the Canaanite coastal population.
