People in bondage — whether literal slavery or spiritual bondage to sin
The Bible acknowledges and regulates (without endorsing) the institution of slavery. Israel's slavery in Egypt became the paradigmatic experience of oppression that God delivered them from. Paul uses slavery as a metaphor for bondage to sin (Romans 6:16-18).
