The daughter of Caleb whom her father gave in marriage as a prize for the conqueror of Kiriath-sepher — won by Othniel Israels first judge
Achsah daughter of Caleb appears in Joshua 15:16-19 (parallel Judges 1:12-15) as the wager-prize Caleb offered to whoever would conquer Kiriath-sepher (Debir): "He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife." Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured the city and married her. Achsah then approached her father riding her donkey and asked for additional springs: "Thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs." Her bold petition preserves a rare narrative spotlight on a daughter in the conquest era.
