The high priest who orchestrated Jesus' arrest and trial
Ossuary inscribed "Yehosef bar Qayafa" (Joseph son of Caiaphas), discovered 1990 in the Peace Forest, Jerusalem, housed at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem
Joseph Caiaphas served as high priest during Jesus' ministry. He convened the Sanhedrin trial, declared Jesus guilty of blasphemy, and handed Him over to Pilate. Ironically, Caiaphas prophesied (unknowingly) that 'it is better for one man to die for the people than that the whole nation should perish' (John 11:49-52) — which is exactly what happened, just not the way he meant.
After raising Lazarus, Jesus withdraws with the Twelve to a town called Ephraim near the wilderness to avoid the Sanhedrin's plot until Passover.
Caiaphas as High PriestPassion WeekJoseph Caiaphas served as high priest from 18 to 36 CE — an unusually long tenure that reveals his political skill.
Sanhedrin Under Roman AuthorityPassion WeekThe Jewish Sanhedrin could judge religious matters but likely could not carry out death sentences without Roman approval.
The Plot to Kill JesusPassion WeekThe religious leaders conspire to arrest and kill Jesus, and Judas offers to betray him.
The Trial Before the SanhedrinPassion WeekThe religious leaders put Jesus on trial at night, looking for any charge that will stick.

Caiaphas cuts through the council's debate with a cold political calculation — one man should die for the nation — not realizing he is unwittingly articulating the precise theological meaning of Jesus' coming death.
Bound and Brought InJohn 18:12-14Caiaphas is introduced here as the high priest who had already publicly declared it expedient for one man to die for the nation — his conclusion about Jesus preceded any hearing.
