Son of Jacob — his tribe settled in the far north and gave Israel its northern boundary marker
The fifth son of Jacob, born to Bilhah (Rachel's servant). Rachel named him Dan, meaning "he has vindicated me" (Genesis 30:6). He became the patriarch of the tribe of Dan, which settled in the far north of Israel. The phrase "from Dan to Beersheba" described the full extent of the Promised Land. The tribe later struggled with idolatry — they set up a graven image at Laish/Dan (Judges 18).
On his deathbed, Jacob gathers all twelve sons and speaks prophetic blessings over each one — shaping the future of Israel's tribes.
