Jewish exile in Babylon, originally named Mishael, renamed Meshach by the Babylonians (Daniel 1:7). Alongside Shadrach and Abednego, he refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue. Their response to the king is one of the hardest lines in Scripture: 'Our God is able to deliver us... but even if He does not, we will not serve your gods' (Daniel 3:17-18). They walked through the fire with a fourth figure and came out untouched.
