A fortified Transjordan town the tribe of Gad rebuilt after Moses granted them the eastern inheritance
GileadAtroth-shophan was one of the fortified towns the tribe of Gad rebuilt after Moses granted them the trans-Jordan inheritance: "And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, And Atroth-shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah" (Numbers 32:34-35). The cluster of Gadite towns lay in the rolling highlands east of the Jordan and north of the Arnon — territory captured from Sihon king of the Amorites. The exact site of Atroth-shophan is uncertain but lay near the better-known Ataroth in the central trans-Jordanian plateau, possibly at Rujm Atarus.
