A Gadite town in Transjordan where Gideon caught the fleeing Midianite kings unawares
GileadJogbehah ("a high place") was one of the fortified Transjordan towns that the tribe of Gad rebuilt after Moses granted them their inheritance east of the Jordan (Numbers 32:35). It rose to historical prominence centuries later in Gideon's extraordinary pursuit of the fleeing Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna after their defeat at Harod. Gideon and his three hundred crossed the Jordan and pushed deep into Transjordan, "and Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents east of Nobah and Jogbehah and struck the army" — catching the two kings' rear guard "secure" and capturing them in a surprise attack (Judges 8:11-12). The site is identified with Khirbet el-Jubeihat about six miles northwest of Amman, Jordan, on the high plateau where the desert routes east of the Jordan run toward Ammon. The detail about traveling "the way of those who lived in tents" suggests Gideon took the desert caravan route to flank the Midianites.
