A Simeonite town in the western Negev whose name means "house of chariots"
NegevBeth-marcaboth ("house of chariots") was a Simeonite town in the western Negev, listed among the cities of Simeon's inheritance "within the territory of the people of Judah" (Joshua 19:5, 1 Chronicles 4:31). The town's name preserves the memory of a fortified chariot garrison, suggesting it had served as a Canaanite or Egyptian military center before passing into Israelite hands. Together with neighboring Hazar-susah ("village of horses") it forms a pair of chariot-related place names that hint at a regional cavalry tradition in the Negev.
