The valley opposite which Israel encamped on the plains of Moab — where Moses delivered Deuteronomy and was buried in an unknown grave
MoabBeth-peor ("house of Peor") sits in the Pisgah/Nebo highlands east of the Jordan on the plains of Moab. Israel camped in the valley opposite Beth-peor as Moses delivered the Deuteronomy speeches (Deuteronomy 3:29, 4:46). It was here, on Mount Pisgah of which Beth-peor is part, that Moses was shown the entire Promised Land and died at age 120 — and the Lord himself buried him in the valley, "but no one knows the place of his burial to this day" (Deuteronomy 34:6). The town was later allotted to Reuben (Joshua 13:20). The name comes from the Moabite deity Peor, the same god whose worship at nearby Baal-peor caused Israel's scandal with the daughters of Moab (Numbers 25:1-5).
