The Moabite border town where Balak met Balaam after the diviners long journey from Pethor
MoabIr-moab ("city of Moab") was a Moabite border town where King Balak met the diviner Balaam after the long journey from Pethor: "And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast" (Numbers 22:36). The two men then journeyed together up to Kiriath-huzoth, Bamoth-baal, and finally the high places where Balaam pronounced his three reluctant blessings over Israel instead of the curses Balak had hired him to speak. The site lay on the Arnon gorge — the natural northern boundary of Moab.
