Levitical hill country town that supported David during his Ziklag campaign
JudeaHistorically Verified
Identified with Khirbet 'Attir in the southern Hebron hills. Eusebius described it as a large Jewish village in the 4th century, and Iron Age remains have been documented at the site.
A Levitical city in the hill country of Judah, assigned to the priests as one of the towns reserved for Aaron's descendants (Joshua 15:48; 21:14; 1 Chronicles 6:57). When David was on the run from Saul and recovering from the Amalekite raid on Ziklag, he sent portions of the captured spoils to the elders of Jattir among other Judean towns that had supported him during his fugitive years (1 Samuel 30:27). The setting indicates Jattir functioned as a sympathetic stronghold for David's network in the southern hill country.
