Fortified city in the lowlands of Judah
JudeaHistorically Verified
Dug up and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Archaeologists found painted Phoenician tombs and Assyrian records mention the city.
Mareshah was a fortified city in the Shephelah (lowland hills) of Judah, listed among the towns Joshua allotted to the tribe of Judah. King Rehoboam rebuilt it as one of his defensive cities, and it was the site where King Asa of Judah defeated the massive Ethiopian army under Zerah. It appears in Joshua, 2 Chronicles, and Micah, where the prophet uses a wordplay on its name to warn of coming judgment.
