A Moabite town named in the ancient Heshbon war song celebrating Sihons earlier conquest of Moab
MoabNophah appears once in Scripture in the ancient Heshbon war song Numbers 21:26-30 cites to vindicate Israel's occupation of the Amorite territory: "We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba." The fragment of pre-Israelite Amorite poetry preserves the memory of Sihon's earlier conquest of Moabite territory, used by the narrator to argue Israel's legitimate claim — they took the land from Sihon, not from Moab. The exact site of Nophah remains unidentified, somewhere between Dibon and Medeba on the central Moabite plateau.
