Egyptian Delta city the Israelites built as slaves and left at the Exodus
EgyptHistorically Verified
Identified with Pi-Ramesses, modern Qantir / Tell el-Daba in the eastern Nile Delta. Excavations have uncovered Ramesses II's vast royal capital — exactly the kind of monumental store city Exodus describes the Israelites building.
The Egyptian Delta city where the Israelites lived during their slavery and from which the Exodus departed. Joseph had settled his family in the land of Goshen "in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses" (Genesis 47:11). Pharaoh later forced the enslaved Israelites to build the store cities of Rameses and Pithom (Exodus 1:11). On the night of Passover the Israelites left Rameses for Succoth, marking the start of the Exodus (Exodus 12:37; Numbers 33:3, 5).
