The people pleaded with Jeremiah:

"Please — let our cry for mercy reach you. Pray to the LORD your God for us, for this entire remnant. Just look at us — there are so few of us left. Ask the LORD your God to show us where we should go and what we should do."

Jeremiah answered them:

"I've heard you. I will pray to the LORD your God just as you've asked. And whatever he answers, I will tell you — all of it. I won't hold anything back."

Then they made a solemn . They said to Jeremiah:

"May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we don't follow through on every word the LORD your God sends through you. Whether it's good news or bad, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God. We're sending you to him, and when we obey, it will go well for us."

Don't be afraid of the king of Babylon. The one you're terrified of — don't fear him. I am with you. I will save you. I will deliver you from his hand.

I will show you such mercy that he will have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land."

"But if you say, 'We will not stay in this land' — if you disobey the voice of the LORD your God and say, 'No. We're going to Egypt. No more war. No more trumpets. No more hunger. That's where we'll live' —

Then hear the word of the LORD, remnant of Judah. This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: If you set your faces toward Egypt and go to live there, the sword you're running from will find you there. The famine you're afraid of will follow you to Egypt. And that is where you will die.

Everyone who sets their face toward Egypt to live there will die by sword, by famine, by plague. Not a single survivor. No remnant left from the disaster I will bring.

Just as my anger and wrath were poured out on the people of Jerusalem, that same wrath will be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. You will become an object of horror. A curse. A cautionary tale. You will never see this place again."

Let that settle. They wanted because it felt safe. No war, no hunger, no threat of . But God said: the very things you're running from will be waiting for you when you get there. You cannot outrun what God has spoken.

I have told you today. Every word. And you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in anything he sent me to say.

So know this for certain: you will die by sword, by famine, and by plague — in the place where you want to go and live."
