Psalms 96 — A call to worship that pulls all of creation into the chorus

And what's being announced? That the God who made the is coming. Not to observe. Not to spectate. To — and that's actually the .
The psalmist opens with an invitation that won't sit still. Three times in two verses — sing, sing, sing:
Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his name.
Tell of his salvation every single day. Declare his glory among the nations — his marvelous works among all the peoples.
Notice it doesn't say "sing a familiar song." It says a new one. There's something about encountering God that demands fresh language — the old words aren't wrong, they're just not enough. And it doesn't say sing in your room, sing at , sing among people who already agree with you. It says declare it among the nations. This worship was never meant to be private. It was meant to travel.
Think about how most people experience worship today — headphones in, eyes closed, deeply personal. Nothing wrong with that. But the psalmist has a much bigger vision. This song is supposed to go somewhere. It's supposed to reach people who haven't heard it yet.
Here's where the psalm gives you the reason behind the invitation. The psalmist declares:
For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised. He is to be feared above all gods.
Every other god the nations worship? Worthless idols. But the Lord — he made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty stand before him. Strength and beauty fill his sanctuary.
That middle line is devastating if you slow down. Every culture, every era, has its gods — the things people organize their lives around, the forces they believe will deliver what they need. Status. Security. Approval. Control. And the psalmist draws a line: all of them are empty. They didn't make anything. They can't sustain anything.
But this God? He made the sky you're standing under. The difference between the Lord and every other object of worship isn't a matter of degree. It's a matter of category. One made the . The were made by human hands — or human appetites. That distinction matters more now than ever, in a culture with a thousand things competing for the place only God is supposed to occupy.
Now the call gets specific — and personal. It's not just "sing from wherever you are." The psalmist summons every family on earth:
Give the Lord credit, all you families of the earth. Give the Lord the glory and strength he deserves.
Give the Lord the honor his name is due. Bring an offering and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth.
There's a rhythm here that's easy to miss. Three times the psalm says "give to the Lord." Not "ask from the Lord." Not "get from the Lord." Give. , at its root, is not a transaction where you show up hoping to leave with something. You come to bring something — your attention, your gratitude, your reverence. In a world that trains you to consume everything, this is a radically different posture.
And that word "tremble" — it's not fear like you're in danger. It's awe like you've walked into something far bigger than you realized. The kind of moment where you stop performing and just stand still. Where everything you thought was impressive suddenly looks small.
The psalm builds to its peak, and the peak is an announcement the psalmist wants carried to every nation on earth:
Say it among the nations: "The Lord reigns." The world is established — it will not be shaken. He will judge the peoples with fairness.
And then something extraordinary happens. Creation itself responds:
Let the heavens be glad. Let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar with everything in it. Let the fields celebrate, and everything growing there. Let all the trees of the forest sing for joy —
because the Lord is coming. He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with his faithfulness.
Read that last image again. Trees singing. Fields celebrating. The ocean roaring — not in chaos, but in . The psalmist is saying that when God comes to set things right, it's not just humanity that benefits. All of creation has been waiting for this. The whole world is groaning for someone to come and make it what it was supposed to be. And when that happens, even the forests will know.
The word "" might make you tense up. We hear it and think , condemnation, a courtroom where you're the defendant. But this psalm treats it as the best news in the world. Because when the judge is perfectly , perfectly faithful — means everything wrong finally gets made right. The oppressed get . The broken gets mended. The chaos gets stilled. That's why the trees are singing. That's why the whole earth is invited into this song. Not because worship is an obligation — but because when you see who's coming, and what he's coming to do, singing is the only response that makes sense.
