Psalms 97 — When the real King shows up, mountains dissolve and every substitute exits the stage

It's one of those passages that forces you to zoom out. Way out. Past your week, past your worries, past everything crowding your attention — to the single biggest reality there is. The Lord reigns. And when you see what that actually looks like, everything else recalibrates.
The opens with a statement so simple it almost doesn't register. But the psalmist wanted you to sit with it:
The Lord reigns — let the whole earth rejoice. Every coastland, every distant shore — be glad.
Clouds and deep darkness surround him, but righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Here's what's striking: there's mystery and stability in the same breath. You can't fully see him — clouds and thick darkness. He's not someone you figure out completely. But you don't need to, because what holds everything up — the very foundation under his throne — is and . You can't see the whole picture, but what anchors it is completely trustworthy. That tension is honest. It's how faith actually works — not knowing every detail, but knowing the character of the one in charge.
Now the camera pulls back, and the psalmist painted what happens when this King makes his presence known:
Fire goes out ahead of him, consuming his enemies on every side.
His lightning lights up the entire world — the earth sees it and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and every nation sees his glory.
Mountains. Melting. Like wax. Think about what that image is doing. Mountains are the most permanent, unmovable things we know. They're the metaphor we reach for when we want to describe something that doesn't change. And in the presence of God, they dissolve. Whatever feels massive and immovable in your life — the thing you've accepted will just always be there — it's wax. It just doesn't know it yet. The God described here doesn't negotiate with obstacles. They simply can't hold their shape in front of him. Even the sky gets in on it — the themselves announce who he is.
After that cosmic display, the turned to something very human — what we choose to give our devotion to. The psalmist declared:
Everyone who worships carved images is put to shame — all who boast in their worthless idols. Every so-called god, bow before him.
Zion hears this and celebrates. The people of Judah rejoice because of your judgments, Lord.
For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth — exalted far above everything else anyone calls a god.
An doesn't have to be a statue on a shelf. It's anything you've built your identity around that isn't God — the career that defines your worth, the relationship you can't imagine existing without, the approval you keep refreshing your notifications to find. And when the real thing shows up, every substitute gets exposed. Not because God is threatened by competition, but because nothing else can actually carry the weight you're putting on it. That's why celebrated when they heard this. Realizing who's actually on the throne isn't restrictive — it's the most freeing news in the world. Everything else you were white-knuckling? You can let go.
The closed with a direct word to anyone who God. The psalmist laid down both a challenge and a :
You who love the Lord — hate evil. He guards the lives of those who are faithful to him. He rescues them from the grip of the wicked.
Light is planted like a seed for the righteous, and joy for those whose hearts are honest.
Rejoice in the Lord, you who do what's right, and give thanks to his holy name.
That word "hate" might surprise you. It's not a popular word in a culture that prefers to stay neutral on everything. But the psalmist wasn't being aggressive — he was being precise. If you love something deeply, there are things that naturally become intolerable to you. Loving God and being indifferent to aren't compatible settings. They never were.
And then there's that image — light being "sown." Planted, like a seed. It means the good you can't see yet is already in the ground. Your isn't wasted. Your in the dark isn't invisible. God is growing something in your life that you'll walk into at the right time. So the psalm ends exactly where it started — with an invitation to rejoice. Not because everything is easy, but because the King on the throne is trustworthy, and what he's planting in you is real.
