As Israel passes through the Arnon Valley on the final approach to Moab Moses cites a fragment from the otherwise-lost Book of the Wars of the Lord — naming Vaheb in Suphah and the brooks of Arnon at the dwelling of Ar on the Moabite border.
Numbers 21:14-15 preserves a brief but tantalizing quotation from the otherwise-lost "Book of the Wars of the Lord" as Israel passes through the Arnon Valley on the final approach to Moab: "Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon, And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab." The Hebrew text reads "Vaheb in Suphah" — the only surviving glimpse of an otherwise unknown ancient war annal that catalogued the Lord's military exploits during Israel's journey through the Transjordan wilderness.
