Joshuas boundary description of Issachars allotment traces a string of towns through the Jezreel Valley — Jezreel Chesulloth Shunem Anaharath and En-gannim — giving the tribe the richest agricultural plain in Israel.
Joshua 19:17-23 records Issachar's tribal inheritance. The lot fell to Issachar in the rich Jezreel Valley: "And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem, And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, And Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez, And Remeth, and En-gannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez." Issachar's sixteen cities included the famous strategic city of Jezreel (later capital of the northern kingdom under the Omrides) and Shunem (where Elisha would later raise the dead son). The tribe's Jezreel Valley allotment made it the breadbasket of ancient Israel.
