John shifts his ministry to Aenon "because there was much water there" — and from this very location he gives his famous testimony about Jesus "He must increase, but I must decrease."
John 3:22-36 records a quiet but theologically pivotal scene from the overlap between John the Baptist's ministry and Jesus's. After Jesus had begun baptizing in Judea through his disciples (John 4:2 clarifies Jesus himself did not baptize, his disciples did), John shifted his own ongoing ministry of baptism to Aenon near Salim — "because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized" (John 3:23). The need for "much water" indicates baptism by immersion: a full pool deep enough to submerge adults, not merely a flowing brook.
