The Chroniclers genealogy of Ephraim preserves the rare biblical record of a woman builder — Sheerah daughter of Beriah granddaughter of Ephraim who built three cities on the Aijalon ridge — Upper Beth-horon Lower Beth-horon and the village named for herself Uzzen-sheerah.
1 Chronicles 7:20-24 preserves an unusual moment in the Chronicler's Ephraimite genealogy — the record of a woman city-builder: "The sons of Ephraim... Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle. And Ephraim their father mourned many days... and called his name Beriah, because it went evil with his house. And his daughter was Sherah, who built Beth-horon the nether, and the upper, and Uzzen-sherah." Beriah's name (meaning "in evil") preserved the family memory of the cattle-raid loss; his daughter Sheerah's building program secured the strategic Aijalon Valley pass.
