Paul walks alone from Troas overland to Assos where his companions in the ship pick him up — then sails south through the Aegean islands stopping nightly at Mitylene Chios Samos and Trogyllium before reaching Miletus for his famous farewell to the Ephesian elders.
Acts 20:13-16 narrates Paul's solo overland walk from Troas to Assos where his companions sailing around the headland picked him up, followed by a multi-day coasting voyage through the Aegean island chain: "And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene. And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus. For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia." At Miletus he summoned the Ephesian elders for his celebrated farewell address.
