Lower town of the twin Beth-horon fortresses guarding the strategic pass into the Ephraim hills
EphraimHistorically Verified
Identified with the modern Palestinian village of Beit Ur al-Tahta, paired with Upper Beth-horon. The twin towns control the ascent from the Aijalon Valley up into the central Ephraim hills.
The lower of the twin Beth-horon towns guarding the strategic pass through the Ephraim hills. Israel pursued the fleeing Amorite kings down through the descent of Beth-horon during the battle of Gibeon (Joshua 10:10-11). Solomon later fortified both Upper and Lower Beth-horon as defensive strongholds (1 Kings 9:17; 2 Chronicles 8:5). The Beth-horon road remained one of ancient Israel's most contested military corridors, used in campaigns from the Maccabean revolt to the Romans.
