After the return from Babylon Nehemiah catalogs the Benjaminite hill country towns where the returnees reestablished settlement — Geba Michmash Aija Bethel Anathoth Nob and many more.
Nehemiah 11:31-36 records the resettlement of Benjamin in the post-exile period: "the children of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Bethel, and in their villages, At Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen." The catalog reaches both into the central Benjaminite highlands and west into the lower Shephelah toward Lod and Ono — a quiet record of the geographic spread of the returned community. Aija here is a variant spelling of Ai, the ancient Canaanite city Joshua had destroyed centuries earlier.
