Joshua traces the northern frontier of Issachars tribal allotment from Mount Tabor through Shahazumah to Beth-shemesh and out at the Jordan — completing the sixteen-city catalog of Issachars Jezreel Valley and lower Galilee inheritance.
Joshua 19:22-23 traces the northern boundary of Issachar's tribal allotment: "And the coast reacheth to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Beth-shemesh; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages." The line ran east from Mount Tabor through the upper Jordan Valley to a Beth-shemesh of Naphtali (distinct from the Judean Beth-shemesh) and out at the Jordan crossing — fixing the strategic frontier between Issachar's fertile lowland farms and the Naphtali highlands above.
