Anna is an eighty-four-year-old widow who has essentially lived in the Temple for decades, praying and fasting, and who now arrives at the exact moment Simeon finishes speaking to confirm what he has just declared.

Annas is listed alongside Caiaphas as one of the high priests who controlled the Temple, representing the apex of Jewish religious authority — institutional power that God also bypasses when he speaks to John.
