The Canaanite coastal city Asher failed to conquer — later the Hellenistic port of Ptolemais where Paul landed
GalileeAcco was a great natural harbour at the north end of the Bay of Haifa. Judges 1:31 records that Asher could not drive out the Canaanites of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob — and ended up living among them instead. The mound at Tel Akko shows continuous occupation since the Early Bronze Age, predating Israel by over a thousand years. In the Hellenistic period the Ptolemies renamed it "Ptolemais," and it became one of the great Mediterranean ports. Paul stopped there one day on his last voyage to Jerusalem (Acts 21:7), one of the few cities he visited that already had a Christian community waiting for him.
