A town in the Judean hill country from which Joshua cut off the Anakim giants
Judean Hill CountryAnab ("grapes") was a town in the hill country of Judah south of Hebron (Joshua 15:50). It was one of the three centers — together with Hebron and Debir — from which Joshua cut off the Anakim, the legendary giant clan whom the Israelite spies had feared during the wilderness years (Joshua 11:21). After their defeat, no Anakim remained in the land of Israel; only in the Philistine cities of Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did a remnant of the people survive (Joshua 11:22). Goliath of Gath, who fell to David's sling generations later, was likely one of these last descendants of the Anakim. The site of Anab is identified with Khirbet Anab es-Saghir (or Khirbet Unab el-Kebir) in the south Hebron hills.
