Capital of King Og of Bashan, later a Levitical city east of the Jordan
BashanHistorically Verified
Identified with Tell Ashtarah in southern Syria. Ancient Amarna Letters and Egyptian topographical lists name the city by the same name.
The capital city of Og, king of Bashan, in the Transjordan tableland. Israel defeated Og at Edrei (Numbers 21:33; Deuteronomy 1:4; 3:1-10), and Ashtaroth was assigned to the half-tribe of Manasseh that settled east of the Jordan (Joshua 13:31). It later became a Levitical city given to the Gershonites (1 Chronicles 6:71). The city took its name from the goddess Astarte (Ashtoreth), and its Iron Age occupation continued long into the period of the divided monarchy.
