A border town between the tribal territories of Ephraim and Benjamin
EphraimAtaroth-addar ("crowns of Addar") was a boundary marker town between the inheritances of Ephraim and Benjamin in the central hill country (Joshua 16:5, 18:13). The northern border of Benjamin and the southern border of Ephraim converged here on the route between Bethel and Beth-horon, passing through Ataroth-addar before descending the Aijalon Valley toward Gezer. The exact location is uncertain — some scholars identify it with Khirbet Attarah near Beth-horon or with Khirbet Raddana near Ai. Distinct from the Transjordan Ataroth of Gad, this Ataroth-addar belonged firmly in the hill country west of the Jordan and served as a fixed surveyor's point in the tribal land grants.
