A city in Galatia where Paul preached on his first missionary journey
Asia MinorHistorically Verified
Identified by inscriptions found at the site in Turkey. The book of Acts describes Paul visiting here.
A city in the region of Lycaonia in southern Asia Minor. Paul and Barnabas fled here after Paul was stoned and left for dead in Lystra (Acts 14:20). They won many disciples in Derbe. Paul's coworker Gaius was from Derbe (Acts 20:4). Paul revisited the city on his second and third missionary journeys.
Acts
Mistaken for Gods, Left for Dead
Derbe is named alongside Lystra as the pair's next destination after fleeing Iconium — a further retreat eastward that nonetheless continues the forward momentum of the Gospel.
Acts
The Longest Sermon and the Last Goodbye
Derbe is identified as the home of Gaius, one of Paul's companions — connecting this journey back to the cities Paul had visited on his very first missionary trip.
