The Galilean home of two of Nehemiahs builders and a royal officer of David
GalileeMeronoth ("ridges" or "joys") was a town in the upper Galilee whose inhabitants were called Meronothites. It is named twice in Scripture, both times in connection with skilled servants of Israel's kings. Jehdeiah the Meronothite served King David as keeper of the royal donkeys (1 Chronicles 27:30), one of twelve named overseers of the king's flocks, herds, and farms. Centuries later, Jadon the Meronothite worked alongside the men of Gibeon and Mizpah to rebuild a section of the wall of Jerusalem under Nehemiah's direction (Nehemiah 3:7). The exact site of Meronoth is uncertain but is generally identified with the ancient name Meron preserved at the town of Meron in upper Galilee, ten miles west of Safed — also known as the home of the second-century rabbinic teacher Shimon bar Yochai whose tomb made the town a pilgrimage site.
