The mountain of curses — where Israel heard what happens when they disobey
SamariaHistorically Verified
Surveyed in the 1980s, when a possible early Israelite altar site was found — though scholars still debate what exactly it is.
A mountain north of Shechem in central Israel, directly across the valley from Mount Gerizim. Moses commanded that when Israel entered the Promised Land, the curses of the covenant would be proclaimed from Mount Ebal while the blessings came from Gerizim (Deuteronomy 27:13). Joshua built an altar on Ebal and carried out this ceremony (Joshua 8:30-35). It stands as a permanent reminder that covenant faithfulness matters.

The Choice That Changes Everything
Mount Ebal is designated as the mountain from which the curses will be proclaimed — standing opposite Mount Gerizim, it forms the physical stage for Israel's most dramatic covenant ceremony.

Back Where Everything Fell Apart
Mount Ebal is where the altar was built and where the other half of the nation stands — the mountain associated with covenant curses in Deuteronomy, making it the site of both sacrifice and solemn warning.
