Lycian port where Paul transferred ships on his return voyage from the third missionary journey
Asia MinorHistorically Verified
Extensively excavated since 1988. Preserves a Roman theatre, the Lycian Parliament building, a monumental gate, and one of the oldest known lighthouses (built under Nero).
A major Lycian port at the mouth of the Xanthos River on the southwestern coast of Asia Minor. After Paul's third missionary journey, he sailed from Rhodes to Patara and there transferred to a ship bound directly across the open sea to Phoenicia, completing his return voyage to Jerusalem (Acts 21:1-3). Patara was famous in antiquity for its temple and oracle of Apollo and remained an important Lycian harbor through Roman times.
