The hill-country town in Ephraim where Joshua received his inheritance and was buried — also called Timnath-serah
EphraimTimnath-heres ("portion of the sun"; also Timnath-serah, "extra portion") was the town in the hill country of Ephraim that the people of Israel gave to Joshua as his personal inheritance after the tribal allotments were complete: "When they had finished distributing the several territories of the land as inheritances, the people of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun. By command of the Lord they gave him the city that he asked, Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. And he rebuilt the city and settled in it" (Joshua 19:49-50). It was at Timnath-serah that the elderly Joshua delivered his farewell address, and it was there that he was buried "in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash" (Joshua 24:30, Judges 2:9). The site is generally identified with Khirbet Tibnah, about 25 km southwest of Shechem.
