A Levitical city of Naphtali on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee
GalileeHammath ("hot springs") was a Levitical city of Naphtali on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, named in Joshua 19:35 as one of the fortified cities of the tribe and in Joshua 21:32 (where it appears as Hammoth-dor) as a Levitical city allotted to the Gershonite line: "And out of the tribe of Naphtali; Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Hammoth-dor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities." The name preserves the memory of the hot springs that still flow at Hammat Tiberias on the western shore. The site lies just south of the modern city of Tiberias.
