A fortified town in the tribal inheritance of Naphtali in upper Galilee also spelled Iron
GalileeYiron (also spelled Iron) appears once in Scripture as one of the nineteen fortified cities in Naphtali's tribal allotment: "And Iron, and Migdal-el, Horem, and Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families" (Joshua 19:38). The town occupied the upper Galilee highlands in the northern reaches of Naphtali's territory — strategically vital but repeatedly the first to fall when invaders swept down from the north. Yiron is identified with the modern Israeli kibbutz Yir'on near the Lebanese border, where the ancient name survives unchanged.
