A Shephelah town and royal pottery center where craftsmen served in the kings service
ShephelahGederah ("sheepfold") was a Shephelah town in Judah's lowland inheritance (Joshua 15:36) that later became known as a royal pottery center. The Chronicler's genealogy preserves a striking detail: "These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work" (1 Chronicles 4:23). The same passage names Netaim and Gederah as the potters' settlements, suggesting an organized royal craft-guild supplying the king's administrative needs. The site is generally identified with Khirbet Judraya in the inner Shephelah.
